Scallop Shell Wind Chime

Making a wind chime from scallop shells is fun and easy. Plus, you’ll get immense pleasure from the gentle tinkling sound it makes as it catches in the breeze.

For this family-friendly project, you’ll need about 24 scallop shells. A few extras might also come in handy in case any break during the making process.

Start by carefully creating a hole in the top of each scallop shell, using a hammer and nail. Then, take a plastic milk container and cut around it, roughly an inch or so from the base. (This is also a great way to repurpose plastic waste!). Punch six holes in the centre of the base of the plastic milk container, again using the hammer and nail.

Scallop shells are often thought of as little more than a by-product of the fishing industry, and once the scallops have been extracted, their shells are often thrown back overboard and go to waste. In fact, these shells can be put to a myriad of uses. From craft projects to use as serving platters in the restaurant trade, scallop shells are ornate, beautiful and incredibly versatile.

Scallop shells can be a very quirky and unique addition to the dining table, whether for use at home or more widely in the commercial food industry. They can be used to serve the scallops themselves or for other fish dishes, bringing a little touch of nature to the table. One advantage to these shells is that they are dishwasher, microwave and oven safe, so in busy kitchens they can be reused time and time again.

Wherever possible, we will recycle boxes and packaging material that comes into our unit. This means that on occasion, you might receive your order in a box that has had a previous life – we think it is better to re-use this box, rather then bin it or send it to a recycling plant.

Camino de Santiago famously encompasses the iconic Scallop Shell symbol. Known in English as “The way of Saint James” it is the network of paths followed by pilgrimages seeking spiritual growth or retreat at the shrine of the apostle St James the Great laid to rest in the Cathedral of Santiago, Galicia Northwest Spain.

The scallop shell itself found amongst the shore of Galicia, has adopted a variety of mythical and symbolic meanings as it is said to promote courage, strength and hope many will acquire one as a souvenir of their experience on one of the greatest walks in the world. Over time the route has increasingly become popular with hiking and cycling enthusiasts as well as organised tour groups.
